What have I gained from my audiences response?

• I have understood that my audience finds the colour scheme chosen of dark red, black, white, gold and multiple shades of grey linkable to the hip-hop/rap background of the streets and clothing worn by these artists from this music genre. Because of  this I am able to conclude that the colour scheme I chose was effective upon my demographic enhancing their relation and experience to hip-hop/rap music.
• I have also understood that the shot types chosen in my magazine, specifically on my contents page was effective as there  was a variety which changed their experience with relation to the artists. Because I chose to do this, I am able to conclude that the were the right selection of images to upload for my magazine contents page.
• From this I have been able to understand that the use of the gold foil writing used continuously from front cover to the double page spread was effective as it enhanced the demographics experience of hip-hop/rap music and created a more urban tone to the magazine as well as making a statement on each page increasing the likability of them being drawn in to read the page.
• Another thing I am now able to understand about my magazine is that the mid shot chosen for the double page spread allows the reader to gain a more intimate experience with the artists as they are able to be seen more clearly. It allows them a greater insight into who the artists truly are and this means that the demographic are more likely to aspire to be like them.
• I have also understood that the use of the large and bold fonts used throughout my contents page has been beneficial to my demographic as it fits its purpose of allowing the reader to easily navigate throughout the magazine but also the typography is relatable to the urban background of hip-hop/rap music and the streets it was created on therefore enhancing my demographics experience of this music genre.

When deciding which media institution I would like to distribute my media product, I wanted to take into consideration who was producing my competitor magazines and therefore I chose to research into their publishing house to discover whether I would like them to distribute my magazine.

Firstly, I looked into XXL magazine’s publishing house. I chose to look into this magazine as it is the same genre as my own magazine (hip-hop/rap). XXL is currently being published by Townsquare Media since 2014 when they acquired the magazine from Harris Publications and was founded in 1997. Harris Publications is an American consumer magazine publisher in New York City founded by Stanley R. Harris. Townsquare Media is an American Media Company based in Greenwich, Connecticut. The company began in the form of radio and is the third largest AM/FM operator in the country with owning over 310 radio stations in 66 markets. It later expanded into digital publishing and marketing meaning it was then accessible to everyone with a technological device. The company became public in 2014.

However, after looking into Townsquare Media and seeing that they already helped publish a hip-hop/rap music magazine, I realised that there was no room in the market for my hip-hop/rap music magazine therefore I then chose to look into a publishing house which didn’t produce just this genre of music but instead a wide variety allowing room in the market for my magazine.

I then chose to look into Kerrang! which is a rock dedicated magazine. It is a UK-based magazine published by Bauer Media Group. It is a European-based media company headquartered in Hamburg that manages over 600 magazines, over 400 digital products, and 50 radio stations and TV stations around the world. Due to being available on digital products, it means that it is easily accessible to all members of the public meaning that their demographic is not limited, only through the fact that rock is less popular than hip-hop/rap music meaning that there is room in the market for my music magazine. Because it is a European-based media company, my magazine would be widely spread across Europe enhancing its profits. Bauer Media Group also produces magazines for the USA meaning that Bauer Media Group is able to publish my magazine worldwide increasing the profits made by my publishing house. From all the magazines the publishing house produce, they make revenue of 2.4 billion euros (a statistic from 2013). This therefore means that the company are able to easily publish my music magazine, Parental Guidance.

From looking into Bauer Media Group, I have concluded that it would be the perfect publishing house to produce my music magazine Parental Guidance. The option of being able to access magazines they produce on digital devices means that my magazine would be easily accessible to anyone and everywhere as the demand of technological devices is on the increase and helps to produce the most revenue. Bauer Media Group have also been running since 1975 meaning that since publishing music magazines, they have a wide audience interested in what the publishing house produce, therefore by choosing Bauer Media Group to publish my music magazine my revenue would increase rapidly.

DEVELOPMENT OF MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

To break up the text I added a head shot of an artist involved within the article. Although it was unconventional to do so, I felt that it was a nice addition to my double page spread as it broke up the text and also linked to the rest of the page as I had done the same thing with featured artists in the second column. Afterwards I continued with the colour scheme beneath.

To add a break to the text I created rectangle using the shape tool and filled it with a dark red colour to follow with my selected colour scheme.
Next I found a google image of a 5 star rating on images and saved it as an image. I then placed it into my double page spread file and using the magnetic lasso tool carefully cut out the stars. I wanted it to look as sharp as possible to make it stand out so I did final touches with the eraser tool and made the brush size small to ensure that I cut the right sections.
Afterwards, I got the gold foil layer used previously for my headlines, drop caps and logo, created a small font size of "P" and "G" and used the magic eraser tool to individually cut out the two letters. I then positioned them just above the middle star like they are just hovering above to make it look like a professional rating score. By fitting the three pieces together and continuing with the colour scheme just makes it appear very professional to the reader.

Following my selected colour scheme by my audience I added in text above and beneath the description of my featured artists to the second column. Using the slice tool I divided the left hand side of the page into 3 columns and used this to keep my text in line.

With the key words I used a Black for the names of the artists and also for quotations to break up the text.

Originally I had the description of the girls at the top of the column but I felt that it wasn't a very intriguing opening to the article so I decided to add in a brief opening but more than the stand first to make it more interesting.

Afterwards I added head shots of the two featured artists and fitted them into the column. Then using white (and black for the artists name) I wrote a description about the artists separately and then together to give the reader a bit more information about the artists before they start reading the actual article. I felt that although the head shots are not conventional I think that they add to the article as they are quite personal shots and although very close up can reveal a lot about the artist before the actual article starts. I cut these images out using the magnetic lasso tool and for finishing touches I used the eraser tool.

I used the slice tool to divide half of my page into 3 and the other side in half. Using these columns I filled the first with a picture of a featured artist mentioned throughout the article. I chose to have a grey textbox beneath to place her name and pull quote in to make stand out. I also chose grey to stick to my colour scheme. On the font of her name I changed the "L" and "S" to a dark red colour to make it a bit more quirky and "in your face" like hip-hop/rap culture. Originally I had a very long pull quote in the text box, however I felt that it was going against convention as after looking at competitor magazines I felt that it was too long in comparison so I cut it down to follow convention.

After placing my masthead to fill one third of the page which is conventional, I felt that it was missing something beneath and added a stand first. I used a drop cap to start this off with the same foil effect inside as the masthead. By keeping this flowing throughout my magazine I felt it created a bling house style.
I then added a brief description of what the article would involve but kept this to one side as I felt it was conventional to do so. However, I also broke convention in terms of the font that I used. I used a font style which only comes in block capitals, but I wanted the stand first in itself to make a statement similar to the culture of hip-hop/rap culture with an "in your face" vibe.

Using the magic eraser tool, I individually cut out each letter with the gold foil effect. I added an effect to the "W" and "?" with Stroke and Drop Shadow to create a subtle outline to these letters.
For the other letters originally they were left without any type of outline. However, I felt that they made it look a little bland and almost as if they were blending into the background. So I added a Stroke effect the all of the other letters to make them stand out a bit more.
My masthead is slightly different to the conventional type of masthead. It is conventional in terms of being at the top of the page, however as there is one word beneath the other and the writing has a filling with a effect it reflects the hip-hop/rap culture of bling and "in your face" style.

For my double page spread I decided a good start would be to select the right background colour. My survey said that they would like too see a black background on every page, however I felt that the main articles in my magazine should be a different colour to make them stand out. I chose a medium grey with a very slight lilac undertone as it linked to my colour scheme selected. I did originally try it with a black background, however I didn't feel that it added much to my magazine and felt it made it a slightly bland and dull in comparison to a medium grey shade.
Next I added my magazines logo of "PG" in gold foil effect with a dark red background and slightly black outline. I chose for my magazine logo to be in gold foil because I felt that it was significant to my masthead. I did this by using the magic eraser tool again to individually cut out each letter. By continuing this logo throughout my magazine it helps to create a house style.
After I then added small page numbers in black (sticking to my colour scheme) to both corners of the page. Afterwards I added the date of the magazine and on the opposite page I added the web address for my magazine so that if they found what the article was about interesting they could look at more articles like this on the website and also more information about the artists featured.

DEVELOPMENT OF MY CONTENTS PAGE

 To fill the final space of my contents page I chose to fill the top left hand corner with a long shot of my featured double page spread artists. I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut around the image and used the magnifying glass to make sure I was cutting the image out. I also used the eraser with a small brush tip to do any final touches and to cut out anything I previously missed. I then placed this image onto a medium grey background and placed the image into the space. I felt that by having a long shot revealed a lot about the artists style and also their personalities in the pose that I chose for them. I felt that by adding this grey background to the image was conventional as on contents pages they tend to have a background colour to the artist relating to their colour scheme to make them stand out more. I didn't do this for all of my images selected as I felt that it made the artists without a background appear more mysterious.

I chose a mid shot of a featured artist on my double page spread to replace the previous image of Doc Marten shoes. Although it too did relate to my double page spread, I felt that an image of an artist was more significant than a pair of shoes. I liked this shot because of the way that I lit the set. I felt that the way it slightly shadowed the right hand side of her face, hair and body was quite mysterious and would make the reader intrigued to read what her page would involve. I chose her in this pose because I felt that it made her look "sassy" and "fierce" and "fearless" as her body language is open. I felt that this pose helped to very clearly express the stereotypical personality traits of a hip-hop/rap artist. I also added the page number that the artist would feature on so that it enables the reader to access the right page number and enables them to navigate through the magazine.
